Maratha Marriage Ceremony Traditions
Weddings are a celebration of love and commitment, and can also be a celebration of the couple’s religion and culture. One such ceremony that you might not be so familiar with? A Hindu wedding ceremony. Whether you’re invited as a guest, attending as a member of the wedding party, or are simply curious, there are a few of the Hindu wedding rituals and traditions you should expect to see.
Sagai or Engagement is one of the vital pre-wedding ceremonies. Sagai is traditionally held at the maratha bridegroom's home where the family members and friends of both the bride and the bridegroom are invited for the ceremony. He then fills the palla with sweets and dry fruits, and presents the bridegroom with a gold Kara, some money and/or other gifts like a watch or a gold chain. This is the first official introduction between the maratha bride & maratha groom as well as their families.
Mehndi
Mehndi, also known as henna, is a paste associated with positive spirits and good luck. Indian Wedding tradition calls for a Mehndi ceremony to be held the night before the wedding as a way of wishing the maratha bride good health and prosperity as she makes her journey on to marriage. Henna is applied to both the hands and the feet as a means of cooling the nerve-endings of the body, preventing the nerves from tensing up.
Sangeet
Prior to the actual wedding, there’s a pre-party called the sangeet where family comes together to sing, dance and revel in the joy of the upcoming union. Family members even give performances! The maratha bride’s family sings a traditional folk song to the maratha groom’s family to welcome them.
Groom's Procession
Arriving in style. the groom's arrival begins the ceremony. Surrounded by friends and family. he meets his bride's family at the entrance to the venue. The bride's mother then welcomes the groom and the families embrace and greet each other with floral garlands. Then, the groom is escorted to the altar (mandap) to await his bride.
Haldi
Jaimala is a wedding ritual in which, the maratha bride and groom put fresh flower garlands into each other's necks, followed by exchange of gifts. The ceremony is not just the meeting of two souls, but is a union of two families, a merge of traditions, values and customs that make the entire wedding complete.
