Marriage, The Lifetime Agreement

 


Marriage is a lifetime agreement virtually every other voluntary agreement you make with another person or entity is for a specified time period and/or purpose. Also, other agreements have an added exit clause. People recognize there is a natural impermanence to all other agreements. People recognize that when things are no longer perceived to benefit one, or the other, a contract should be dissolved. Marriage, a legally and socially sanctioned union, usually between a man and a woman, that is regulated by laws, rules, customs, beliefs, and attitudes that prescribe the rights and duties of the partners and accords status to their offspring (if any). The universality of marriage within different societies and cultures is attributed to the many basic social and personal functions for which it provides structure.

The sacramental aspect of marriage under Hindu law has three characteristics: (1) That it is a sacrament union, which means that marriage is not to gratify one's physical needs; but is primarily meant for the performance of religious and spiritual duties; (2) a sacramental union implies that a marriage once entered cannot be dissolved on any ground whatsoever; and (3) a sacramental union also means that it is a union of soul, body and mind. It is a union not only for this life, but for all lives to come. The union is not only for this world, but also for other worlds.

A commonly accepted and encompassing definition of marriage is the following: a formal union and social and legal contract between two individuals that unites their lives legally, economically, and emotionally. The contractual marriage agreement usually implies that the couple has legal obligations to each other throughout their lives or until they decide to divorce

Marriage, also called matrimony or wedlock, is a culturally recognized union between people, called spouses, that establishes rights and obligations between them, as well as between them and their children, and between them and their in-laws. It is a religious and holy union of the bride and groom which is necessary to be performed by religious ceremonies and rites. It is considered a cultural universal, but the definition of marriage varies between cultures and religions, and over time. Typically, it is an institution in which interpersonal relationships is acknowledged or sanctioned. A marriage ceremony is called a wedding.

Marriage can be recognized by a state, an organization, a religious authority, a tribal group, a local community, or peers. It is often viewed as a contract. When a marriage is performed by a religious institution, it is a religious marriage. Since time immemorial marriage has been the greatest and most important of all institutions in human society.
